The Facts on Chocolate/ Chocolate Facts/ Chocolate
Here are some interesting facts that I have discovered on chocolate that I thought I would share. Chocolate was first introduced to the United States in 1765. A man named John Hanan brought cocoa beans from the West Indies into Dorchester Massachusettes. This is where the first chocolate factory in this country was established.

In 1849 during the Gold Rush of San Francisco, Dominbro Ghirardelli began making chocolate. His original factory still stands at Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco, California.

The year 1871 was a landmark year for american chocolate. Milton Hershey founded his company in Pennsylvania, at the very young age of nineteen. In 1875 Daniel Peter introduced us to milk chocolate. He later sold his creation to his neighbor, Henri Nestle, and this is how Nestle chocolate came into being.
In 1907, the iconic milk chocolate Hershey Kisses were introduced. They are still one of the most successful chocolates. Hershey produces approximately twenty to twenty five million per day.

In 1938, Nestle crunch was introduced. It was the very first chocolate bar to combine milk chocolate and crunchy crisps. And in 1939 Nestle introduced us to the first chocolate chip.

It was during the the second world war, the U.S Government commissioned Milton Hershey to create a candy bar to be included in the soldiers rations. The candy bar chosen was the famous Hershey milk chocolate bar. It was so successful Hershey chocolate was called upon again during the Persian Gulf war. They had to create a chocolate bar that could withstand high temperatures. These chocolate bars became known as the Desert Bars.

To this day the United States produces more chocolate than any other country, but it is the Swiss who consume the most chocolate. Americans eat an average of twenty two pounds of candy each year, or approxiamtely 2.8 billion pounds annually, split almost equally between candy and chocolate. As of 2006 consumers spent more than 7,000,000 a year on chocolate related products. This just proves that we sure love our Chocolate.
